Yes, effective marketing is important for being successful in our businesses, practices, and in reaching sales goals. But there are other good reasons for connecting with others:
- Connecting builds social capital:
- Social capital is an asset created when relationships between people lead to action, generally for the good of all parties.
- For example:
- Your colleague, Mary, introduces you to Josh. Through that introduction and interaction between you and Josh, Josh thinks of you when looking for a consultant for his company.
2. A connection doesn’t need to be a close one to benefit both parties:
- Studies show that weak ties can be better than strong ones
- A friend of a friend or a member of the same association can support you by:
- Boosting your salary
- Helping you get a promotion
- Increasing your career satisfaction
- Helping you gain access to information you need
- The more weak ties you have the better. This casts a wide net.
3. It’s good for us personally:
- So much of what we do now is via email or on our smartphones.
- Meaningful connections, however informal, are even more important now.
- This makes the act of connecting even more rewarding.
Take Action:
- How can you take one step this week to increase social capital in your life and community?
- Put it in your calendar and make it happen!
- Share here how it went and what benefits you noticed.
