What Prompts People to Get Started on Estate and Legacy Planning?

In the survey I recently conducted, individuals said they decided to get going on the planning process for the following reasons:

  • A younger couple with their own children had wealthy acquaintances who were killed in a plane crash and left a child without an estate plan in place.  They wanted to protect their own children.  In their friends' case, there was a flight for the child who inherited the money and the final outcome was not necessarily in the best interest of the child.
  • One couple was starting a business and they needed lots of life insurance - they had young kids and the primary income earner was the husband who traveled a lot for the business.
  • Another family was encouraged to do estate planning by their church as part of the church's endowment funding.
